Custom Decks Built for Sacramento Summers
A good deck turns a plain backyard into the room you actually live in — morning coffee, family dinners, a quiet place to land at the end of the day. American Gardens Landscaping designs and builds freestanding custom decks across the Sacramento area, in composite, redwood, and pressure-treated wood, finished with code-built railings, wide comfortable stairs, and clean under-deck skirting.
Every deck starts with a free on-site visit: we look at your yard, your sun, and how you want to use the space, then bring you a written proposal with one clear price — no surprises later.
What We Build
- Composite decks — low-maintenance boards that shrug off Sacramento heat, sprinklers, and busy summers. No staining, no sealing, no splinters.
- Redwood & pressure-treated wood decks — the natural look, built on pressure-treated framing with proper footings and hardware.
- Raised decks & wide stairs — level platforms for sloped yards, with stairs placed where they serve the yard best — including stairs at both ends, like the design concepts below.
- Railings — composite, wood, and black metal railings built to California code, with gates where you need them.
- Under-deck skirting — horizontal-slat and solid skirting that closes the underside cleanly, keeps animals out, and gives the deck a finished, built-in look.
- Deck replacement — an aging deck removed and rebuilt on a sound structure, reusing a solid existing frame where it honestly can be reused.

Recent Work: Deck Skirting Replacement in Shingle Springs
For this raised deck in Shingle Springs, we removed the old diagonal lattice skirting and replaced it with horizontal wood-slat skirting that wraps both faces and the corner — a cleaner look that also closes off the space under the deck.

Built Right, From the Footings Up
- Concrete footings sized and dug for your soil and the deck’s height

- Board spacing set for drainage and seasonal movement
- Railings and stairs measured and built to current California code
- A final walkthrough together when the work is complete — we stand behind every job we do
Composite or Wood?
Composite costs more up front and asks almost nothing of you afterward — a wash now and then is enough. Wood costs less to build and asks for regular sealing or staining to stay ahead of the Sacramento sun. On your free visit we’ll lay out both honestly for your yard, your shade, and how you actually live outside. (A fuller comparison is coming in our blog’s deck-materials guide.)
Our Process
- Free on-site visit — we measure, listen, and check access, slope, and sun.
- Written proposal — one clear combined price for the deck we designed together.
- Build — footings, framing, decking, railings, stairs, and skirting, in that order.
- Walkthrough — we go over the finished deck with you, board by board.

Deck FAQs
Q: Do I need a permit for a deck?
A: It depends on the deck’s height, size, and your city — the rules are not the same everywhere. We check the requirements for your address before we build, and we build railings and stairs to current California code either way.
Q: How long does a deck take to build?
A: Most residential decks take one to two weeks of working days once we start, depending on size, height, and materials. Your proposal states the schedule for your project.
Q: Can you replace just my deck surface?
A: Sometimes — if the frame underneath is sound, re-decking is a smart spend. On the free visit we inspect the framing and tell you honestly which route serves you better.
Q: Composite or wood — which lasts longer here?
A: Composite boards carry long manufacturer warranties and don’t rot or attract termites; wood is a natural material that lasts for decades when it is maintained. Structure matters most: a well-built frame outlasts either surface.
