Finished xeriscape front yard at sunset with a pink sky, flagstone path, light gravel and river-rock borders in front of a stone-veneer house, by American Gardens Landscaping in the Sacramento area

Every Sacramento homeowner knows the summer water bill spike: the lawn wants water almost daily through months of 100-degree heat, and it still goes brown at the edges. Xeriscaping — designing the yard around drought-wise plants, rock, and efficient drip irrigation — is the permanent way out of that cycle. But how much water does it actually save?

Where a traditional yard drinks

In a typical Sacramento home, the landscape is the single biggest water user — and a thirsty lawn is most of it. Spray irrigation makes it worse: on a hot, breezy afternoon, a large share of spray water evaporates or runs off before it ever reaches a root.

What a xeriscape changes

  • Lawn shrinks or goes. The thirstiest surface in the yard is replaced with planting beds, decomposed granite, and rock.
  • Sprays become drip. Drip irrigation delivers water slowly, right at each plant’s roots — almost nothing lost to wind or evaporation.
  • Plants are chosen for this climate. Lavender, rosemary, kangaroo paw, ornamental grasses, sago palms and similar plants look full and green on a fraction of a lawn’s water once established.
  • Bark and ground cover hold moisture in. A proper layer over the soil slows evaporation between waterings.

The combined effect is not a small trim — homeowners routinely see their outdoor water use drop dramatically, in many cases by half or more, while the yard looks better in August than the lawn ever did. Exact savings depend on how much lawn you remove and what you plant, which is why a design walk-through matters.

It is not “zero-scape”

A good xeriscape is not gravel and a cactus. Done right, it is layered, colorful, and full of texture — flowering shrubs, grasses that move in the breeze, stone that frames it all — on a watering schedule measured in days per week, not minutes per day.

Frequently asked questions

Will a xeriscape lower my water bill right away? Yes — the first full summer after conversion is when most homeowners notice the difference, and established drought-wise plants need even less in year two and beyond.

Can I keep some lawn for the kids or the dog? Absolutely. Many of our designs keep a smaller, useful lawn where the family actually uses it, and xeriscape the rest.

Do drought-wise plants need any irrigation at all? Yes, but far less. A drip system on a modest schedule keeps them thriving — delivered at the roots, not sprayed into the air.
